Anthony C. Gunst, IV, Esq.

As a principal of the Nissenbaum Law Group, LLC, Anthony C. Gunst, IV, Esq. is the head of both the firm’s professional responsibility and commercial litigation practices.

His attorney ethics defense team handles professional responsibility matters in three states: New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. It provides both legal representation for attorneys going through random attorney trust account audits, as well as those who may be the subject of ethics investigations, pre-trial hearings, administrative trials or appeals. With regard to the latter, Mr. Gunst has personally handled administrative ethics trials to completion, represented clients on appeal before the Disciplinary Review Board of New Jersey and ultimately, the state Supreme Court. He has handled numerous matters before the New York Attorney Grievance Committee and also has an ethics defense practice in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Gunst’s ethics team also works hand-in-hand with the firm’s transactional team in representing law firms in matters such as (a) modifying retainer agreements for compliance with prevailing ethics rules and case law and (b) analyzing the ethical issues implicated in law firm succession planning and mergers. Additionally, Mr. Gunst has served as ethics counsel and co-counsel in civil litigations involving factual allegations or defenses premised upon attorney misconduct.

Moreover, Mr. Gunst oversees the firm’s commercial litigation practice in both the federal and state courts. He is a seasoned litigation lawyer who has handled complex commercial litigation in the Federal District Court for the District of New Jersey and for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. In addition, he has handled a variety of commercial litigation matters at the state level in New Jersey and New York and has experience in appellate work as well. Mr. Gunst has also handled matters outside the tri-state area, such as, for example, in the Eastern District of California, Northern District of Oklahoma and the Illinois Circuit Court.

Mr. Gunst is a graduate of Washington and Lee School of Law (Lexington, Virginia). During law school, Mr. Gunst worked at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, LeClairRyan and the Supreme Court of Virginia Office of Chief Staff Attorney. During his time with the FBI, Mr. Gunst focused primarily on white-collar crime such as corporate fraud. In that regard, he worked closely with forensic accountants auditing business records.

After law school, Mr. Gunst served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Samuel J. Ragonese, J.S.C. in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division: Gloucester County. He is currently admitted in the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania Bars.

Mr. Gunst’s honors include being a semifinalist in The Robert J. Grey, Jr. Negotiations Competition; serving as an Editor of the Journal of Civil Rights & Social Justice; and being selected for the Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s Heartland Initiative.
